The light comes from a disc at the foot of the cylinder and travels up through it, so the whole column lifts and the frame throws long thin shadows out across whatever it is sitting on. It behaves more like a candle than a lamp.

Touch the base to switch it on and to step through three settings: a warm amber, a brighter daylight tone and a clean white. Warm at the low end is the one most people leave it on. It charges over USB and runs cordless, and a charge lasts anywhere from about 12 hours at the brightest setting up to around 50 hours on the lowest.

Size: 18 cm tall with a 9 by 9 cm footprint, weighing 650 g. That is small, about the height of a wine glass, and it takes up less room on a table than a coffee mug. The weight is in the base, so it sits firmly rather than feeling light.

Materials: a metal frame and base with a clear acrylic cylinder.

Care: wipe the metal with a soft dry cloth. For the cylinder use a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. Acrylic marks more easily than glass, so keep away from abrasive cloths and from cleaners containing solvent or alcohol. Charge it with the USB cable supplied.
