A small lamp in glossy mustard yellow: a half sphere shade sitting over a rounded diffuser, on a slim stem rising from a domed base. The shade hides the light source completely, so what you see is a warm pool spilling out underneath rather than a bulb. It is a compact thing, and the colour does most of the talking.

It runs on a rechargeable battery and charges over USB-C, so there is no cord in use at all. That makes it one of the few lamps you can genuinely put in the middle of a dinner table, carry out to a step at dusk, or leave on a shelf that has no socket near it.

Brightness is adjustable and there are three light tones to pick from, warm through to a cooler white, so it can be low and yellow for the evening or brighter and neutral when you want to see what you are doing.

Size: about 18 cm across the shade and 30 cm tall, and it weighs around 0.5 kg. Small enough to lift with one hand and to move without thinking about it.

Care: wipe the lacquered surface with a soft dry or barely damp cloth. The gloss finish shows fingerprints and marks easily, so avoid abrasive cloths and any cleaner containing solvent. Keep it dry and charge it over the USB-C cable supplied.

With no cord there is nothing stopping it sitting between the plates. Put it out for dinner, take it through to the lounge afterwards, leave it on the hall shelf on the way past. It works the way a candle does, except you can pick the brightness.

The slim stem is there to be held. At about half a kilo it lifts easily in one hand, which is the whole point of a lamp that does not plug in. It moves from room to room as the evening moves with you.
